Ithuba project improves literacy

Continuing Education at University of Pretoria Trust (CE at UP) played an instrumental role in training 140 educators as part of the Ithuba Writing Project. This project is a collaborative partnership between the governments of South Africa (through the Department of Education) and the USA (through USAID).The project aims to improve the reading abilities in their mother tongue of learners from Grade 4 to Grade 6.

The material focuses on Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Life Orientation. Books were authored by the educators in all 11 official languages. In total, the project will deliver 2.3 million books and educators’ guides to schools countrywide.

Minister Naledi Pandor, Minister of Education, was the key note speaker at the certification ceremony that was held in the auditorium of the University’s Groenkloof Campus. The certificates were presented to the candidates by President Ricardo Romo of the University of Texas at San Antonio and Prof Nthabiseng Ogude, Vice-Principal of the University of Pretoria.
