The right of access to health care is entrenched in the Bill of Rights of South Africa’s Constitution and the right to health care is placed under the same socio-economic banner as food, water and social security. South Africans' use of public healthcare services has almost doubled over the past eight years and universal access to primary health care, introduced in 1994, forms the basis of healthcare delivery programmes that have a major impact on the South African population.
